Humanity's energy dilemma becomes more obvious when we think clearly about alternative fuel sources.  Adaptations, again, become problems.  The sheer scale of human energy use is so vast that even today's small steps toward replacing fossil fuels with biofuels boost food prices and put ecologically valuable land at risk.  The calories needed to keep a Hummer humming could feed a hundred humans.
