The middle-class ascendancy in post-World War II America was an extraordinary demonstration of the possibilities of a democracy grounded in the belief that everyone should share in the benefits of a well-functioning society.  Unfortunately, it turned out to be only a temporary victory in the war of the owning class against the rest.
