Using the notion of "out of sight, out of mind," the U. S. Forest Service has officially sanctions sets of cosmetic strips, that is, intact forests directly bordering public highways.  The USFS calls these strips "viewsheds" and they are maintained in order that the public not be overly concerned or reactive about logging practices.
