As retailers sound the drumbeat of faster, cheaper, and more, they create a powerful downward pressure on suppliers thaqt rewards rock-bottom wages, long hours, and hazardous working conditions, as well as toxic materials and dangerous pollutants in local rivers and landfills.Such cost-cutting measures are reinforced in the marketplace, where price alone drives most of consumers' buying decisions, while they ignore the hidden impacts of the steps taken along the way to keep prices low.
