It wasn't just callous stupidity, although there was plenty of that, too. It wasn't even necessarily willful blindness to the fact that needless cancer deaths hurt the nation economically as well as humanly. Cleaning up our drinking water was just not worth the trouble. Politicians didn't see the mileage in it. Most voters would rather not think about the problem, just hoping it wouldn't get them. Bureaucrats couldn't agree o­n priorities. Labor didn't see it as an issue. The press couldn't figure out how to make it sell newspapers. Drink now, die later.
