Ducks Shooting the Rapids in Murray, Utah

Teenage mallards, hens and drakes,
Gabble, dabble as daylight  breaks
             Above the pinkish Wasatch.
Two skiers, tourist samurai,
Load their gear and plan to fly
             Through Utah's fabled powder.
Through a culvert, beneath the street,
Purled a suburban creek, complete
             With class two mini-rapids.
"Look at that!" cried my companion
As the ducks flew up the canyon
             And dropped into the brook.
They bobbed and paddled, two abreast,
Through the culvert, and dropped unstressed
With a splash into the rill.
The rapids next each bravely shot,
Duck voyageur and Argonaut,
             Down to the dabbling pool.
Teenage mallards, hens and drakes,
Fly back upstream as daylight breaks,
             To raft downstream again.
The quacks and chuckles with each run
Proved that each float was done for fun:
             Duck's version of high five!
Joie de vivre:  it's metabolic—
All God's creatures long to frolic:
             Each day a jubilee!
