On Care for Our Common Home

Written by Pope Francis

On June 18, 2015 Pope Francis spoke truth to secular power in a powerful encyclical, LAUDATO SI'.   The gist of the Holy Father's message is that human activity, driven by greed, is killing the planet and degrading the future for future humanity (if, indeed, there is one.)  Pope Francis' message is that which has been given by many other religious teachers, such as the two previous Catholic Popes, Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Thomas Berry, the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso and Thich Nhat Hahn. Pope Francis expresses the needs of our sister Earth and her all-inclusive family of beings.  Holy Father Francis truthfully but gently shows how the dire prediction of futurist Isaac Asimov ("The Earth became an uninhabitable slum." is rapidly becoming an unpleasant reality.  Human behaviors founded in compassion may, possibly, lead to a sustainable, just, peaceful and beautiful Earth as God intended.

In Laudato Si' Pope Francis outlines the current state of our "common home", the Gospel message as seen through creation, the human causes of the ecological crisis, ecology and the common good, and a call to action for each of us.

A powerful message indeed!
